Paramount cancels 'Dexter: Original Sin' after its first season
Paramount canceled Dexter's prequel despite its renewal and is betting everything on Resurrection
Dexter: Original Sin will not have a second season, even though it had already been renewed on SkyShowtime. The decision surprised fans and confirms the franchise's difficult moment in its attempt to expand.
According to Variety, Paramount abruptly halted production without moving forward with filming or pre-production. The company's strategy now focuses on Dexter: Resurrection, the sequel starring Michael C. Hall.

The unexpected ending of Dexter: Original Sin
The prequel premiered in December 2024 and concluded its first season in February of this year. However, it never achieved solid audience numbers and was marked by doubts regarding its budget.
Paramount, after the merger with Skydance, decided not to move forward. The blow is greater because in April the series had already received the green light for a second installment.
The future of the saga lies in Dexter: Resurrection
Meanwhile, Dexter: Resurrection is moving forward strongly. Its first episode, which premiered on July 11, brought together 4.4 million multiplatform viewers in just one week. In addition, it reached a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The project, which concludes its first season on September 5, is shaping up to be the new core of the franchise. Paramount is already assembling a new writers' room to ensure a second cycle.
A star-studded cast that wasn't enough
Original Sin featured Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter in 1991 Miami, accompanied by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, and Christian Slater. Michael C. Hall even participated with his voice-over.

The series had Clyde Phillips as showrunner and Michael Lehmann as director, but neither the talent behind nor in front of the camera managed to save it from cancellation.
Showtime in creative crisis
The end of the prequel also reflects the situation of Showtime, which has lost ground to competitors like HBO. Today it survives with few originals: The Chi, The Agency, Yellowjackets, and now Dexter: Resurrection.
What was supposed to be a journey to the origins of the "killer of killers" ended up as a brief and interrupted experiment.
