Pope Leo XIV plans to visit Argentina as part of his first tour of Latin America, according to Uruguayan Cardinal Daniel Sturla. The tour would also include Uruguay and, possibly, Peru.

Sturla recounted that, after the election of the new pontiff, he personally extended the invitation to travel to his country, and Leo XIV, in the presence of Argentine Cardinal Mario Poli, replied without hesitation: "Yes, Argentina and Uruguay".

The cardinal emphasized that the Pope is fully aware that neither Argentina nor Uruguay were officially visited during Francis's pontificate, and he assured that there is a "very high probability" that the trip will happen soon. Leo XIV also has a deep connection with the region, particularly with Peru, a country where he resided for several years and even obtained citizenship.

The news of a possible visit sparked great enthusiasm among both the faithful and the Argentine political sphere. It has been more than three decades since a pope set foot on Argentine soil, and Leo XIV's arrival could become a historic event.

Although the Vatican has not yet defined dates or organizational aspects, the pope's intention is clear. This tour would represent a significant gesture toward Latin America, and particularly toward Argentina, consolidating both institutional and spiritual ties at a crucial moment for the Church and the region.

From the Casa Rosada, it was confirmed that the Government of Javier Milei is preparing an official invitation that the Argentine president will personally present during his upcoming visit to Rome. In that meeting with Pope Leo XIV, the formal offer will be made for him to visit Argentina, a gesture loaded with diplomatic symbolism and institutional significance.
