Pope Leo XIV will receive Javier Milei in his first papal audience

The meeting will take place on June 6 at the Vatican. Milei will seek to strengthen ties and will request a papal visit to the country

Argentine President Javier Milei will be received by Pope Leo XIV on June 6 at the Vatican. This will be the new pontiff's first official audience with a Latin American head of state since his election on May 8.

The meeting aims to pay tribute to Pope Emeritus Francis, analyze the global situation, and establish a personal relationship with the head of the Catholic Church.

Key topics on the agenda

During the meeting, Milei will present his economic adjustment plan and explain the geopolitical reasons behind his closeness to the United States and Israel.

Additionally, he will formally request that Leo XIV visit Argentina as Supreme Pontiff, highlighting that the Pope, before succeeding Francis, traveled throughout the country as a cardinal and now wishes to return as leader of the Church.

Profile of Pope Leo XIV

Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, is the first American Pope and also holds Peruvian citizenship. His career includes decades of service in Peru as a missionary and bishop, and he was ordained cardinal in 2023.

His election as pontiff represents a bridge between North and South America.

Milei's European tour

After his visit to the Vatican, Milei will meet on June 7 with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with whom he keeps a close ideological alignment.

Subsequently, between June 9 and 13, he will participate in the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France, where he is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with President Emmanuel Macron.

Finally, he will travel to Jerusalem on a state visit to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog, reaffirming his support for Israel and condemning global antisemitism.
