President Trump seeks to promote marriage and birth rates in the United States

Faced with concerns about a decline in birth rates in the West, the U.S. government will seek to encourage these habits

The administration of President Donald Trump is evaluating a series of proposals to encourage marriage and increase the birth rate in the United States, in an attempt to reverse the declining birth trend in the country. Among the measures under discussion, a $5,000 bonus for each birth stands out.

White House officials have been organizing meetings with public policy experts and birthrate advocates to develop strategies that encourage more women to have children and promote traditional family values, aligned with Trump's ideological vision and his close circle.

One of the most striking proposals consists of delivering a direct payment of $5,000 to new mothers after the birth of their children, as a way to alleviate the immediate costs associated with motherhood.

Another idea suggests that 30% of Fulbright scholarships, one of the most prestigious academic programs of the U.S. government, be awarded to people who are married or have children.

There is also discussion about the possibility of implementing educational programs to teach women about their menstrual cycles and ovulation periods, with the aim of better understanding their fertile windows and thus facilitating conception.

These discussions are framed in a concerning context: the birth rate in the United States reached a historic low in 2023, with fewer than 3.6 million births, representing a drop of 76,000 babies compared to the previous year.

It is the lowest figure since 1979, and reflects a profound change in the typical family composition of the country. The average American family no longer has the traditional 2.5 children, but is below two.

Although there was a slight uptick in births between 2021 and 2022 due to the post-pandemic impact, the overall trend remains downward. Additionally, the average age of first-time mothers continues to rise: birth rates among teenagers and young women have decreased, while more women in their 30s and 40s are having children.

The idea of a "new demographic boom" has been supported by influential figures in the conservative sphere, such as entrepreneur Elon Musk, Vice President JD Vance, and several officials within the Trump administration.

All of them promote a pro-natalist agenda, based on the premise that demographic recovery is key to economic development and the cultural stability of the United States.

Simone Collins, a pro-natalist activist, consulted by the New York Times, stated: "This administration is inherently pro-natalist. Just look at the number of children the main leaders of the government have. That wasn't seen under Biden."

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Trump "is proudly implementing policies to support American families" and that his administration focuses on leaving a better country for the next generation. Leavitt, a mother herself, expressed satisfaction in working with a president who prioritizes family well-being.

Although no measure has been officially announced yet, birthrate is expected to be a central axis in the social policy of a second Trump term. The decisions could have a significant impact on the debate about the role of the State in the family and reproductive life of Americans.
