The Undersecretary of University Policies clarified on A24 that the University of Buenos Aires has all its funding requests covered and dismantled the opposition's narrative

In a conversation with Pablo Rossi and Eduardo Feinmann on A24, the Undersecretary of University Policies, Alejandro "Profe" Álvarez, replied to the questions regarding funding for the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Faced with Rector Ricardo Gelpi's warning about an alleged "critical state," Álvarez explained that the institution has already received 100% of the requested resources.
The official detailed that three months ago UBA requested an additional 33 billion pesos (72,752,546 pounds), which was granted in full. "I don't have any request for extra funds for the University of Buenos Aires," he clarified, emphasizing that there are no additional pending claims.
Guaranteed funds and specific compensations
Álvarez specified that all national universities are receiving attention on a case-by-case basis, even with compensation for extraordinary expenses such as electricity or security. He also stressed that a Necessity and Urgency Decree (DNU) guarantees funding coverage until the end of the year: the resources have already been credited to the higher education program.

Regarding the 2026 budget, he indicated that the Government submitted the project to Congress with updated execution and that the funds for next year will be included in that planning.
Profe's taming of UBA's Undersecretary of Finance
Later, on A24, they contacted Matías Ruíz, UBA's Undersecretary of Finance, who stated that the construction works at universities dependent on the Nation have been "paralyzed for a year and a half." "We are in a moment of extreme danger at UBA," he continued.
However, he was interrupted by Profe, who left him offside: "How could UBA be in danger if you have the approved budget from now until the end of the year?". Then, Ruíz continued, stating that there is control over how every peso is spent at the University.
"That's false, you don't let us audit so we have no knowledge of how you spend the money," Álvarez countered. "You don't even upload purchases to the Compr.ar channel, we don't know what you spend it on," he concluded.
Criticism of the law vetoed by Milei
The Undersecretary also justified the presidential veto of the university funding law. He explained that the regulation was "poorly drafted" and violated the Financial Administration Law because it did not specify the budget item from which the resources would come. "When an expense is created, it must be charged to a specific item," he warned.

He added a second problem: the interference in university salary negotiations. According to Álvarez, the collective bargaining must be solved between the Government and the sector's unions, not through a law that attempts to set those conditions unilaterally.
