The war in Ukraine entered its most critical diplomatic point this week since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022. Meanwhile, Washington is pushing to impose an agreement to end the conflict, the Kremlin raised the stakes: Vladimir Putin warned that Russia is ready to conquer more territory if Kyiv doesn't accept the peace plan backed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Russian leader stated that the document prepared by the U.S. administration "can lay the foundations" for a definitive agreement. However, he made it clear that his patience has limits and that, if Ukraine rejects the conditions, Moscow will continue the war until it achieves its objectives. As an example, he mentioned the recent capture of the strategic city of Kupiansk, and warned that this scenario "will inevitably be repeated in other key areas of the front."

Putin emphasized that the plan presented by the United States incorporates several of Moscow's central demands: territorial concessions, recognition of the annexation of Crimea, and a drastic reduction of the Ukrainian Army. The 28-point document also divides the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia according to the current front line. Washington even considers security guarantees for Kyiv, although without allowing the permanent deployment of NATO troops on Ukrainian soil.

According to the Kremlin, the draft emerged from direct talks between Putin and Trump at the Anchorage, Alaska summit, where both parties initially showed willingness to negotiate. But the process stalled due to Kyiv's rejection, which refuses to consider any territorial surrender.

The diplomatic pressure intensified this Friday, when Trump publicly confirmed that Volodymyr Zelensky has until next Thursday, November 27, Thanksgiving Day in the United States, to formally respond to the proposal. "Thursday seems like an appropriate time to us," said the U.S. president, insisting that Ukraine is losing ground on the battlefield and the war has become "a bloodbath".

Meanwhile, Zelensky rejected the idea of ceding Donbas or accepting a structural reduction of his armed forces. He considered the proposal "intolerable" and announced that he will present an alternative to Washington, although he admitted that the country faces "a very difficult decision: lose dignity or risk losing a key partner."

In line with Trump, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that the plan "is a good deal for both Russia and Ukraine" and that it is still under review. The White House keeps that this is the fastest way to stop the escalation and avoid a prolonged clash that would further wear down the West.

Putin insists that the West lives in "an illusion" about the possibility of militarily defeating Russia. He warns that if Kyiv doesn't yield, it will be Moscow that imposes the facts on the ground. Next week will be decisive: if Zelensky rejects the plan, the war could enter an even more aggressive phase. If he accepts, Kyiv will face the toughest decision: give up territory to keep Washington's support, or try to maintain resistance without the firepower that only the United States can provide.
