Motorsport compared last season's on-track performance data to create a speed ranking
Franco Colapinto's performance in his first full season in Formula 1 once again became a talking point. The specialized outlet Motorsport published a speed ranking based on real on-track data, and its methodology sparked debate in the paddock.
The study took as its basis the internal comparisons between teammates, considered the most reliable parameter to measure a driver's individual level, since both have the same car. Based on those direct references, the ranking was then linked together with previous matchups of drivers who changed teams in order to establish equivalences.
As an example, the pace difference between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton sharing Ferrari in 2025 was measured, which then made it possible to extrapolate comparisons with George Russell at Mercedes, thanks to previous records between the Briton and the seven-time champion.
In that system, Colapinto finished 18th (average +0.891 seconds) in the overall standings, ahead of Yuki Tsunoda (19th), Jack Doohan (20th), and Liam Lawson (21st). In detail, his deficit was +0.888 in qualifying (19th place) and +0.893 in race pace (17th place).
Colapinto terminó en el puesto 18
Meanwhile, his teammate, Pierre Gasly, placed 13th (average +0.639 seconds) with a deficit of +0.522in qualifying and +0.756in race pace (both 13th place).
Although the numbers do not place him among the standouts, the analysis was also affected by the progressive drop in performance of the Alpine, a factor that reduced his chances of climbing positions and showing greater competitiveness throughout the year.
