In the first week of December, 80% of the area planted with winter crops had been harvested, with results that reaffirm the high level of wheat production in the province of Córdoba, in line with the expected national production, according to the Provincial Grain Exchange.
In the case of chickpeas, yields higher than the historical average are estimated; however, production would not reach that average as a consequence of the smaller planted area in the current season.

After the survey carried out in the first week of December, the estimated wheat production amounts to 7.3 MTn, a figure that would double that obtained in the previous season.
Average wheat yield in Córdoba
The expected average rainfed yield stands at 43.9 qq/ha, exceeding the provincial historical average by more than 70%.
Even the lowest estimated yield, which according to the reports would be 28.0 qq/ha in the Ischilín department, is positioned above the historical figure.
Meanwhile, in irrigated systems significantly higher yields were reported, with records of up to 90 qq/ha in the localities of Río Cuarto and Arroyito.

In this context, the yield anomaly map—defined as the percentage difference between the estimated yield and the historical average for each department—shows that in most of the provincial territory the values are positive, with a predominance of high and very high increases.
As a whole, the results reflect an exceptional season in productive terms, driven mainly by favorable water conditions.
The factors that contribute to the high wheat yields in Córdoba
Furthermore, according to comments from our collaborators, the high yields are also attributed to the use of varieties with high yield potential, which helped maximize the productive response under both rainfed and irrigated conditions.
For chickpeas, variable yields are expected between areas, conditioned mainly by excess water, some hail episodes and, to a lesser extent, the incidence of diseases.
Nevertheless, the provincial average yield would exceed the historical average by more than 30%, so positive results are anticipated for chickpea producers.
Regarding provincial production, in line with previous surveys, it continues to be lower than that recorded both in the previous season and with respect to the historical average, as a consequence of the downward adjustment in planted area.
When the wheat and chickpea harvest ends in Córdoba
The entire area of winter crops that was still standing was at harvest maturity, so harvesting would be completed during this month if weather conditions allow, bringing to a close a season with outstanding productive results at the provincial level.
With respect to quality, test weight, protein content, and gluten content were surveyed this time, some of the key variables that determine wheat quality.
In general terms, in situations of high yields, these parameters tend to be diluted. This theoretical condition coincides with the comments from our collaborators.
This season reflects the importance of accompanying seed technology with the necessary nutrient supply from sowing and of having commercial wheat quality analyses lot by lot, in order to avoid a decline in quality and minimize commercial discounts.
