Renault confirms its continuity in Formula 1 and is betting on a new era with Alpine
After months of rumors about a possible sale and the abandonment of its engine program, the French automaker confirmed its continued presence in the category
The future of Renault in Formula 1 has been marked in recent years by uncertainty: under the Alpine brand since 2021, the team hasn't achieved outstanding results with its V6 turbo hybrid engine, which has fueled speculation about a withdrawal.
The situation worsened after the resignation of Luca de Meo, former CEO of Renault, and the confirmation in September 2024 that the group would abandon its engine program for 2026.
However, fears were dispelled in Monza. François Provost, the brand-new CEO of the group, assured in the paddock that Renault will remain in Formula 1 for "a long time." "The main purpose of my visit is to reaffirm that we're staying," he stated in an interview with Canal+, in line with what Flavio Briatore had already expressed weeks earlier.

A period of stability and new commitments
That same weekend, Alpine announced the renewal of Pierre Gasly until 2028, a decision that Provost described as "a very positive sign of stability and commitment." "We're entering a new era, which will be one of performance," the executive emphasized.

This was joined by the arrival of Steve Nielsen as Chief Operating Officer, also made official in Monza, which he also sees as a good example of the team's new direction.
What's next for Alpine
Since its return as a factory team in 2016, Renault has achieved only one victory with Esteban Ocon in Hungary 2021 and nine podiums in total. Starting in 2026, the team will race with customer engines from Mercedes, leaving behind its own project, with the expectation that this change will mark the beginning of a more competitive period.
