Just over a month before the presidential elections at River, which will be held next November 1, one of the opposition candidates, Luis Belli Príncipe, criticized the statue of Marcelo Gallardo located at the entrance of Estadio Monumental.
"I said it three years ago and people looked at me strangely: we made the mistake of building a statue for Gallardo," he stated on the stream Pelusa al Aire. Although he clarified that the honoree deserves it, he hinted that it could bring bad luck: "It's not guaranteed that this statue isn't a jinx."

The official also argued that the sculpture complicates any future negotiations with "el Muñeco." "You have to sit down and talk to someone who has a statue at the door. How do you tell him you're not bringing him a player? How do you tell him you're not signing nine million?" he questioned.
Belli recalled that the person who promoted the statue was Carlos Trillo, the officialist candidate in the upcoming elections. "Trillo did it because he's not opposition. If I want to put a sticker on a wall at River, they make a scandal. If I put up a statue, it's because the officialism allows it, and if the officialism allows it, it's because I'm not opposition," he said.
The eight-meter (26 feet 3 inches) bronze statue was inaugurated on May 27, 2023, when Gallardo had already left the position of coach, which was taken over by Martín Demichelis. Since then, River has won three titles: the Liga Profesional, the Supercopa Argentina, and the Trofeo de Campeones.

For the November elections at the club, Jorge Brito can't run for re-election, so he chose Stefano Di Carlo as the officialist candidate. The other four lists presented are those of Carlos Trillo, Luis Belli Príncipe himself, Pablo Lunati, and Daniel Kiper.
