The Bolivian government of Rodrigo Paz intensified its calls this Thursday to enable a humanitarian corridor on the blocked roads after new fatalities were attributed to difficulties in accessing medical care. The demand came despite the temporary truce announced by neighborhood organizations in El Alto on the occasion of the national holiday.
According to authorities, two people died on Wednesday after being unable to receive timely medical assistance due to the blockades by Evo Morales that continue to affect much of the country. With these cases, the number of victims linked to the crisis has risen to at least ten since the conflict began.
The Federation of Neighborhood Boards of El Alto temporarily allowed the entry of some food and fuel into La Paz and El Alto, cities that have been suffering from supply problems for weeks. However, the Executive maintained that the measure is insufficient as long as the passage of essential medical supplies remains restricted.
President Rodrigo Paz and his ministers insisted that the immediate priority is to ensure the functioning of hospitals and health centers. According to official data, dozens of patients depend daily on the supply of medical oxygen to survive, while several hospitals face a critical situation due to a shortage of supplies.
