The Romanian community in Ireland will raise money to save a church from Islam.

The fear that the historic Anglican church, Christ Church in Leeson Park, could be converted into an Islamic center has sparked a response in the Orthodox community

The Romanian Orthodox community in Ireland has launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of acquiring the historic Anglican church Christ Church of Leeson Park in Dublin, which was recently put up for sale.

They fear that if they are unable to purchase the building, it could be transformed into an Islamic center or another type of non-Christian facility, which has prompted an urgent mobilization to preserve the Christian religious character of the temple.

Priest Călin Florea, representative of the Romanian Orthodox community, explained that they are seeking to raise at least 700,000 euros (1,543,235 pounds) more in order to make a competitive offer for the building, whose sale price could reach four million euros (8,818,770 pounds). Currently, they have managed to raise more than 35,000 euros (77,170 pounds) through the GoFundMe platform, in addition to other private donations and institutional efforts.

Florea emphasized that this project not only addresses a practical need, having a place of their own for worship, but also a deep desire for spiritual unity among Romanian faithful in Ireland.

According to his words, it is "a challenge, but also a sign of unity and faith," and he is confident that, with God's help and the community's support, they will be able to achieve it. He invited believers to contribute with donations, to spread the initiative, and above all, to accompany the effort with prayers.

The current owners of the building, the Anglican Church, have expressed their preference that the church continue to function as a place of worship, although Irish legislation requires that the property be open to offers for other community or social uses. This situation adds pressure to the Romanian community, which fears losing the opportunity to faster or higher offers from other entities.

Christ Church of Leeson Park is a building with considerable historical and architectural value, so its final fate concerns not only Orthodox faithful, but also sectors that wish to preserve Dublin's religious and cultural heritage.
