The 23-year-old midfielder, who doesn't have a place in Marcelo Gallardo's team, could continue his career in the Aztec country
Santiago Simón's cycle at River appears to be coming to an end. After being relegated by Marcelo Gallardo and not playing any minutes since April 23, Toluca from Mexico has made a concrete offer to acquire the midfielder who came up through the youth ranks at Núñez.
According to reports, Toluca offered 2.8 million dollars for 50% of the player's rights, and River is willing to accept. However, the closing of the deal still depends on a key point in the negotiation: at Núñez, they want to impose a mandatory purchase for an additional 30% of the rights, which has not yet been agreed upon.

Before the Mexican club's approach, Elche from Spain had submitted an offer to sign Simón on loan, but it was rejected. In the domestic sphere, both Rosario Central and Talleres showed interest in him, although the player prioritizes moving abroad to secure a financial improvement.
His numbers and current situation at River
Throughout his time at the club, the midfielder played 146 matches, in which he scored 6 goals and provided 16 assists. In addition, he was part of a successful period in terms of titles, with five championships won: the 2021 and 2023 Professional Leagues, the 2023 Argentine Super Cup, and the 2021 and 2023 Champions Trophies.
Simón, who has not played since April, had started the year as a starter in Gallardo's midfield, especially in the first part of the 2024 Copa Libertadores, where River reached the semifinals. However, as the months went by and with the arrival of Kevin Castaño, the midfielder lost prominence and became expendable for the coach.

This way, everything seems set for him to continue his career in Liga MX, closing a cycle in which he alternated good performances, but without ever fully establishing himself as a key piece at River.
