Sega celebrated 20 years of the 'Yakuza' saga with an emotional video.

The historic Yakuza / Like a Dragon saga celebrated its 20th anniversary since its original release in Japan on December 8, and Sega marked the occasion with a special video. The video looks back on two decades of cultural impact and the growth of a franchise that went from being niche to becoming a global phenomenon.

The clip shows a man's working life over the past 20 years, guided by iconic quotes from Kazuma Kiryu, the undisputed protagonist of the series.

Two decades of evolution and expansion for the saga

As the international press recalls, since its debut in 2005 for PS2, the franchise has grown continuously. Today, it features eight main installments, a prequel, multiple spin-offs, remakes, as well as a movie and a series produced by Amazon Prime.

The blend of drama, humor, action, and endearing characters has made Yakuza a trademark within Sega's catalog and one of the most valued by the community.

2025 news: Majima's return in his own spin-off

This year saw the release of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, a spin-off led by Goro Majima, one of the most beloved characters in the universe. The concept combines the saga's classic essence with a pirate aesthetic set in Hawaii, creating a tone completely different from the usual.

The release reaffirmed Majima's narrative weight within the franchise and opened new storylines for the future.

What's next: a highly anticipated remake for February 2026

Sega also confirmed that on February 12, 2026, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties will go on sale. It will be available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.

This is one of the saga's most significant installments, so its technical and narrative update is one of the major highlights on next year's calendar.
