A massive study detected more active top-tier nuclei in dwarf galaxies and rethinks their evolution

An unprecedented astronomical survey revealed that dwarf galaxies host more active black holes than previously thought. The finding changes the perspective on how galaxies evolve and how their cores grow.

The study, presented at an international astronomy conference, analyzed thousands of nearby galaxies and detected much greater activity in their centers. The results raise new questions about the formation of the universe.

A census that redefines what was known

The work was based on the most extensive census carried out so far on active top-tier nuclei. More than 8,000 galaxies in the nearby universe were studied.

Until now, it was estimated that only 10 out of every 1,000 dwarf galaxies had active black holes. The new analysis raised that figure to a range of 20 to 50 per 1,000.

The mass of the galaxy, a central key

The survey showed a marked difference according to stellar mass. In intermediate-size galaxies, the activity climbs to between 16% and 27%.

In large galaxies, the percentage reaches even 48%. This abrupt jump drew the attention of the researchers.

Why does the activity increase so much?

According to the authors, something changes significantly between dwarf and medium-size galaxies. It could be due to internal processes or to limits in current detection techniques.

Another hypothesis suggests that many active black holes in small galaxies remain hidden by intense star formation.

How they managed to detect weak signals

The team combined optical, infrared, and X-ray data. That cross-referencing made it possible to identify very faint signals that had previously gone unnoticed.

Thanks to this methodology, it was possible to "pierce through" the brightness of young stars and detect the activity in the cores.

What it implies for understanding the Milky Way

The results reinforce the idea that large galaxies formed from the merger of many dwarf galaxies. In that process, their black holes also would have ended up merging.

This helps explain the origin of the supermassive black holes that dominate top-tier centers.

The researchers clarify that these numbers are approximate. The activity may be underestimated due to technical limitations.
