Syria will reopen its embassy in the United States and will join the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, an international alliance led by Washington.
The news was confirmed by a U.S. official on condition of anonymity during the visit of Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa to the U.S. capital.
“The United States will allow Syria to resume its embassy activities in Washington for greater coordination on counterterrorism and security,” the source stated. The informant added that “during the visit of interim President Ahmed al Sharaa, Syria announced it will join the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS,” marking an unprecedented event in bilateral relations after more than a decade of diplomatic rupture.

The meeting between Al Sharaa and President Donald Trump took place on Monday at the White House, in a historic event that was not covered by the media. This is the first visit of a Syrian head of state to the United States since the country's independence in 1946. According to official sources, the meeting focused on security cooperation and Syria's reconstruction after fourteen years of civil war.
After the meeting, Trump stated: “I like him,” referring to Al Sharaa, whom he described as a leader capable of rebuilding a country devastated by conflict. “I want Syria to become a very successful country... Al Sharaa can achieve it, I really believe that,” added the U.S. president, highlighting the potential of the new Syrian government.
Ahmed al Sharaa, who leads a coalition that overthrew dictator Bashar al Assad last December, represents a new political era for Syria, with promises of openness and stability. His visit also symbolizes an attempt at rapprochement with the West after years of isolation.

Meanwhile, the State Department announced that a temporary "pause" will be applied to U.S. sanctions against Syria, while Congress considers their permanent removal. This measure is interpreted as a gesture of goodwill and an incentive to strengthen diplomatic ties.
The reopening of the Syrian embassy in Washington and Damascus's incorporation into the anti-terrorism coalition reflect a deep shift in the United States's strategy in the Middle East. According to the statements, the goal is to "strengthen coordination on security and counterterrorism," establishing new channels of communication that will allow progress toward regional stabilization and the reconstruction of the Arab country.
