The creative duo behind Stranger Things is leaving Netflix and betting on movies and series with Paramount
After nearly a decade at Netflix, the creators of Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, have announced their departure from the platform. Their destination: an exclusive contract with Paramount that promises large-scale films and series.
The announcement comes just before the final season of Stranger Things, which will be split into three parts starting in September. The Duffer brothers will remain involved with the series while they explore new projects under their production company Upside Down Pictures.

An agreement that marks a turning point
The contract with Paramount has an initial duration of four years and begins in April 2026. It includes film, television, and streaming, with a focus on ambitious projects of great scale. The creative duo wants to bring their talent to the big screen, beyond the series that established them.
The reunion
Cindy Holland, who approved Stranger Things in 2015, now leads streaming at Paramount, while Matt Thunell presides over Paramount Television. The Duffer brothers will work closely with Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, strengthening their influence in film and series.
Statements from the main figures
"Joining Paramount is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream," the Duffer brothers stated. Holland described them as "exceptional storytellers with a unique talent for creating worlds that become embedded in popular culture."

Continuity with Netflix
Although they are taking a new direction in their careers, the Duffer brothers will remain connected to the conclusion of Stranger Things and to spin-off projects such as The Boroughs. They emphasize that this is not a breakup, but rather a friendly change of course that opens up new creative possibilities.
