The list of nominees for The Game Awards 2025 took an unexpected turn this week. One of the developers requested to withdraw their game because they believed it did not meet the requirements for the category.
The case involves Megabonk, a title that had been selected for Best Indie Debut alongside Blue Prince, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Despelote, and Dispatch. However, its creator publicly clarified that it was not their first project and decided to remove it from the competition.

Megabonk's developer requested exclusion due to a misunderstanding
According to John "Megabonk" in a message posted on X (Twitter), the nomination was not correct because he had already released other titles under different studio names. For this reason, he considered that competing in the debut category was incompatible with his track record.
"It's an honor and a dream to see Megabonk nominated at the TGA, but I don't think it's appropriate to be in the 'indie debut' category. I've already developed games before under other studio names. Megabonk is not my first work," he wrote. He also thanked those who voted and recommended supporting other teams who are indeed presenting their first work.
Geoff Keighley's response
Following the announcement, Geoff Keighley, host and organizer of The Game Awards, replied publicly by thanking the developer's attitude and highlighting his integrity. He noted that John will share more details about his story when he feels ready.
Keighley also praised the quality of the game, assuring that Megabonk "is exceptional," even though it will no longer be part of the voting in that category.
