Netflix made it official that the fifth season of The Witcher will be the last, marking the end of a saga that began in 2019 and quickly became one of the most popular fantasy productions in streaming. The platform indicated that this final stage will premiere in 2026, although its announcement was made now as part of an update of its content scheduled for this year.
The decision had been under consideration for some time, especially after the internal changes that the series went through and the evolution of its audience.
Henry Cavill's departure and Liam Hemsworth's arrival
One of the most talked-about transformations was the change of the lead actor. After three seasons bringing Geralt of Rivia to life, Henry Cavill said goodbye to the role at the end of the third installment. From the fourth season on, the role passed to Liam Hemsworth, a move that caused divided opinions among the most loyal followers.

Despite the initial doubts, Netflix maintained the continuity of the main characters: Anya Chalotra as Yennefer and Freya Allan as Ciri remain an essential part of the plot until the end.
A sustained drop in audience levels
The Witcher debuted with remarkable strength in 2019, with more than 76 million households playing at least part of the first season. However, the figures decreased with each installment. The second season reached 18.5 million views in its first days; the third dropped to 15.2 million, while the fourth —the first with Hemsworth— fell to 7.4 million.
Even so, the production insists that ending the series in the fifth season is not a direct consequence of the numbers, but a pre-established plan to maintain narrative coherence.
An ending planned as a complete arc
Lauren Hissrich, the show's showrunner, explained that seasons four and five were conceived as a unified story. They were even filmed consecutively to ensure continuity in tone, characters, and central conflicts.

The cast also agrees that this format will allow for a more solid ending. Joey Batey, who plays Jaskier, described this period as "two parts of the same conclusion". The synopsis reveals that multiple enemies are moving their pieces on the Continent, focusing their threats on Ciri and forcing the protagonists to reunite to face the family's final destiny.
The future of the franchise beyond the screen
As the series moves toward its conclusion, the The Witcher brand remains active thanks to the development of The Witcher 4, the next installment in the popular video game saga. Although it still has no specific release date, its production is moving forward and keeps millions of players interested.
On social media, the news of the end of the series caused opposing reactions: some consider it a natural conclusion after creative fatigue, while others regret that a large-scale adaptation is saying goodbye after only five seasons.
What is certain is that Netflix confirmed that the final season will arrive this year, closing a cycle that left an important mark on the fantasy genre within streaming.
