Chaco's justice sentenced César Sena and his parents to life imprisonment for the femicide of Cecilia Strzyzowski

The Justice of Chaco Province sentenced César Sena, Emerenciano Sena and Marcela Acuña to life imprisonment this Tuesday. At last, they will face firm accountability for the femicide of Cecilia Strzyzowski, which took place on June 2, 2023, in the city of Resistencia.

The reading of the sentence was carried out in a virtual hearing, presided over by Technical Judge Dolly Fernández. In the meeting, she announced the sentences following the previous guilty verdict issued by a popular jury. The three convicted individuals followed the hearing from their cells, without physical presence in the courtroom.

The jury had already found César Sena guilty of the crime of doubly aggravated homicide. The aggravating factors of the relationship and the presence of gender-based violence, a criminal classification that carries the maximum penalty, could be proven .

The role of the parents and the planning of the cover-up

In the same ruling, Emerenciano Sena and Marcela Acuña were convicted as primary participants in the femicide. During the trial, both the prosecution and the plaintiffs maintained that both had a decisive role in the plan that followed the crime. They helped to conceal the murder, eliminate evidence, and guarantee their son's impunity.

According to the accusation, the couple's actions were key to obstructing the investigation and diverting the initial searches. This situation increased their criminal liability in the case.

The court also solved the situation of those charged with covering up the crime.

  • Gustavo Obregón was sentenced to 5 years and 10 months of effective imprisonment.
  • Fabiana González received a sentence of 5 years in prison.
  • Meanwhile, Gustavo Melgarejo was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months of suspended imprisonment, along with preventive measures, for the crime of simple cover-up.

Judge Fernández set the sentences within the legal limits, based on the jury's unanimous verdict.

Delivery of the remains

At the close of the hearing, the Magistrate ordered that the remains of Cecilia Strzyzowski be handed over to her mother, Gloria, once the sentence becomes final. In the same way, the young woman's personal belongings, found in a vacant lot and discarded after the femicide, will be returned.

The ruling marks a turning point in one of the most shocking cases in Chaco's recent history, not only because of the brutality of the crime but also because of the power network that surrounded the Sena clan for years.

The life sentence represents a sign that impunity is beginning to crack after decades of political corruption, clientelist structures, and state protection.

During the years of Jorge Capitanich's government and that of his allies, the territorial power of social leaders aligned with the ruling party was consolidated with scant oversight. Even today, the current national senator retains shares of political influence. In that context, the court ruling not only establishes criminal responsibility for the femicide of Cecilia Strzyzowski, but it also exposes the limits of a system that tolerated abuses of power for years.
