After the heavy rains of the last few days in Córdoba, authorities issued a warning to tourists because of the strong surges of the rivers in the mountains.
Civil Defense of the Province reported that the phenomenon caused an immediate and dangerous increase in the flow of various rivers and streams, which forced the activation of preventive operations with permanent monitoring.
Las autoridades de Córdoba advirtieron de los peligros por las crecidas de los ríos.
The most critical point was recorded in the town of Tanti, very close to Carlos Paz, where the river experienced a 3.5-meter (11.48-foot) rise, a situation that represents an extreme risk for those who are near the riverbed.
The river surges caused by the rains
Los Cocos: 73 millimeters
San Esteban: 56 millimeters
Tanti: 3.5-meter (11.48-foot) rise
Capilla del Monte: 1-meter (3.28-foot) rise
Departamento San Alberto: 8 millimeters on average
Departamento San Carlos Minas: 35 millimeters on average
Departamento San Javier: 12 millimeters on average
Authorities warn that the surges are usually sudden and may occur even when it is not raining in the lower area, due to the movement of water from the high peaks, so residents are advised to stay alert.
Recommendations during the rainy season in Córdoba
The main recommendations include completely avoiding crossing fords or streams whose flow has risen, even if the surface appears passable.
Likewise, camping or remaining on riverbanks is prohibited, since "peak" surges may take people by surprise in a matter of seconds.
People are asked to pay special attention so as not to park vehicles in flood-prone areas and to stay away from poles or trees during electrical activity.
