The president of the United States, Donald Trump confirmed before Congress that his country received more than 80 million barrels of Venezuelan oil and described Venezuela as "friend and partner" in energy matters. The announcement was made during his State of the Union address, where he also highlighted the strong growth of domestic oil and gas production.
"We have just received from our new friend and partner Venezuela more than 80 million barrels of oil", Trump stated. He also stressed that U.S. production increased by more than 600,000 barrels per day and that natural gas reached record levels thanks to his policy of expanding drilling.
Relaxation of sanctions and oil reactivation
In recent weeks, the U.S. administration relaxed certain sanctions to facilitate the reconstruction of Venezuelan oil infrastructure and to allow the sale and transportation of crude to international markets.
The process began in January, when Washington authorized operations related to the export of oil and derivatives. The measure made it possible to accelerate shipments to U.S. refineries and other strategic destinations.

In parallel, the Venezuelan Parliament approved a new hydrocarbons law that opens exploitation to the private sector. The José terminal, operated by Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), concentrates about 70% of the country's exports.
Logistics and expansion of shipments
Several trading houses began chartering supertankers with a capacity of up to two million barrels each. Among them are Vitol and Trafigura, which signed multimillion-dollar agreements for the export of crude and fuels.
The use of larger vessels makes it possible to reduce logistics costs and increase the efficiency of shipments. Until now, a large part of the shipments were carried out on Panamax and Aframax tankers to the United States, while other cargoes were redirected from Caribbean terminals.
The heavy Merey crude was quoted in January with a significant discount compared with Brent, which created commercial opportunities in a tight international market.
Energy security and record production

Trump linked the arrival of Venezuelan oil to a broader strategy of energy strengthening. The president insisted that the United States combines record domestic production with strategic agreements that guarantee supply stability.
According to what he highlighted, the policy of productive expansion made it possible to reach historic levels in both oil and natural gas. The combination of greater domestic extraction and international agreements reinforces the United States' energy position on the global stage.
The shipment of more than 80 million barrels thus marks a new chapter in the commercial relationship between Washington and Caracas, with a direct impact on the oil market and on regional geopolitics.
