The president of the United States emphasized the need to have the territory located in the Arctic for reasons of national security
Donald Trump's administration is studying a diplomatic path to reinforce the presence and strategic control of the United States in Greenland without resorting to the use of force.
The plan contemplates the drafting of a Free Association Agreement that could be offered directly to the authorities of the island, bypassing the government of Denmark, which currently exercises sovereignty over the territory.
This type of agreement would allow Greenland to maintain its internal self-government while the United States would assume responsibilities in defense and security, in addition to providing financial support and commitments to improve the standard of living. Washington already keeps similar frameworks with Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau, which reinforces the legal and political viability of the proposal.

In line with this possibility, Trump's strategy pursues two central objectives: to accentuate the political tensions between Greenland and Denmark and to establish a direct negotiation channel with the island, avoiding the intermediation of Copenhagen.
This approach would allow the United States to advance its strategic interests without a formal annexation or a military confrontation with a NATO ally.
The president's renewed emphasis on Greenland has been taken more seriously after the recent demonstrations of U.S. military power in other international arenas.
Greenland, although sparsely populated and located largely within the Arctic Circle, possesses key strategic value. The melting of ice is opening new maritime routes in the Arctic, increasing geopolitical competition among major powers.

In addition, the island hosts significant reserves of critical minerals and potential energy resources, considered essential for the national security of the United States and NATO.
According to several government sources, it is practically ruled out that a military intervention is a realistic option. An armed action against territory controlled by Denmark would entail a serious diplomatic crisis and would put at risk the cohesion of the Atlantic Alliance.
Although Trump has hinted in the past that he doesn't rule out the use of force, different analyses maintain that the political cost could far exceed any strategic benefit.
The United States already has a military presence on the island through the Pituffik Space Base, covered by the 1951 Defense Agreement with Denmark. Experts point out that this framework could be updated to expand cooperation in defense, access to resources and strategic investments, without violating Danish sovereignty.
