The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, may resign according to Sky News

In recent days, the news outlet Sky News has speculated about the early departure of the left-wing prime minister of the United Kingdom

Two senior Labour MPs have suggested that the United Kingdom's Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, could be forced to step down in the coming months if his government continues to underperform.

According to Sam Coates, Sky News's deputy political editor, sources within the government itself, including a cabinet member and a prominent politician, have put Starmer "on alert."

Both warned that if the Labour Party performs poorly in the regional elections scheduled for next May in Wales, Scotland, and London, this could mean the end of Starmer's leadership in Downing Street.

Coates emphasized that "the level of unhappiness and despair in parts of the Labour Party is so remarkable" that some ministers believe Starmer could be forced to resign within months.

In Wales, Nigel Farage's Reform UK party is experiencing a strong surge in the polls, while in London, Labour is facing pressure from the left, especially from the Greens. This combination of political threats is generating tension within the party and raising questions about the prime minister's strategy.

Amid this climate of uncertainty, Starmer publicly reaffirmed his unconditional support for Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves, who had a visibly emotional appearance during a prime minister's questions session. A spokesperson explained that her state was due to "a personal matter."

However, her reaction had an immediate negative impact on financial markets: the pound sterling and long-term government bonds suffered a considerable drop.

The previous day, Starmer's controversial social welfare bill was passed in Parliament, despite a considerable internal rebellion within the Labour Party.

The government's policy reversals created a £5 billion ($6.35 billion) financial hole in the country's accounts, which has intensified criticism both inside and outside the party.

Despite the controversy, Starmer defended Reeves firmly in an interview for the BBC's Political Thinking podcast, where he assured that she will remain chancellor "for a long time."

He firmly rejected that her emotional state was related to politics or the recent budget controversy. "It's a personal matter and I'm not going to invade her privacy," he stated.

The prime minister also praised Reeves's work, highlighting that they both work "in total harmony." He compared their relationship with examples from the past in which prime ministers and their finance ministers did not act in coordination, assuring that this is not their case.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Wes Streeting also came to the defense of both leaders, stating that Starmer has been "consistently underestimated" and that his position as prime minister is secure. He described Reeves as "resilient," "strong," and "determined to continue."
