A moment of extreme concern was experienced in Uruguayan soccer during the match between Danubio and Boston River for the Apertura Tournament. In the 88th minute, Argentine forward Ivo Costantino was involved in a violent clash of heads and had to be taken off in an ambulance, in a scene that paralyzed the Jardines del Hipódromo stadium.
The incident occurred after a contested aerial ball. Costantino and defender Martín González went decisively to challenge for the ball and the head-on impact was so strong that the striker collapsed to the ground. Teammates and opponents immediately called for medical assistance when they noticed that he was not responding.
The medical staff came on quickly, immobilized him with a neck brace and worked for several minutes on the field before transferring him to a health center to carry out tests. Silence and uncertainty dominated the end of the match, which finished 2-0 in favor of Danubio.
Meanwhile, the Boston River player involved in the play also received medical attention and continued the match with his head bandaged.
Hours later, the first signs of relief arrived. "Ivo Costantino is in stable condition. He will remain under observation and will undergo the relevant tests while he is accompanied by his family and part of our staff", the club reported through its social media. Later, the player himself shared images from the clinic, confirming that everything had turned out to be a major scare.
Constantino está estable y se encuentra en observación
After the match, Franja's coach, Diego Monarriz, reflected the mood that ran through the squad because of the incident: "It was a win overshadowed and saddened by what happened to Ivo. Fortunately, we found out that he is fine, he is stable. Hopefully, he will continue to improve".
What could have been a tragedy fortunately ended in a major scare and in the reassurance of knowing that the forward is progressing favorably under medical observation.
