After a month of waiting, the Copa Libertadores finally returns with the quarterfinals. The teams responsible for kicking off this new phase will be Vélez and Racing, who will be looking to secure the Argentine spot in the semifinals.
El Fortín is coming off a good run of results. In the Professional League, Guillermo Barros Schelotto's team has won 4 of its last 5 matches and hasn't conceded a goal since the 1-0 defeat against San Lorenzo at the beginning of August. Its most recent match was against Huracán at the Ducó, where it drew 0-0 with a squad made up mostly of substitutes.

Meanwhile, Academia is experiencing a more inconsistent present than its rival tonight. After the round of 16 series with Peñarol, the team led by Gustavo Costas managed just one win in four matches (1 win, 1 draw, and 2 losses), with the 2-0 at the Cilindro in the clásico against San Lorenzo over the weekend.

As for the head-to-head record, both teams have faced each other a total of 70 times, with 25 wins for the Avellaneda side, compared to 22 for the Liniers side and 23 draws. Their last meeting was last year in the 17th round of the Professional League, a match that ended with a 1-0 win for La V thanks to a lone goal by Brian Romero.

On the other hand, this will be the third match they play against each other in the Copa Libertadores. Previously, they met in Group 2 of the 1997 edition, with two wins for Vélez (1-2 at the Cilindro and 1-0 at the Amalfitani).
