WhatsApp launches AI-powered chat summaries: how they work and when they are coming
This is how this new tool works and when it will be available to all users
A new WhatsApp feature promises to make your life easier. Now you can get automatic summaries of your chats thanks to Meta's Artificial Intelligence.
The tool has already started to roll out in some regions and aims to solve one of the most common problems of the messenger: accumulated messages that are difficult to read one by one.

How do WhatsApp summaries work?
The feature is activated by tapping a button inside the chat. The AI is responsible for generating a summary of the content you haven't read yet, whether in individual conversations or groups.
The summary appears as a kind of preview that lets you quickly understand what was discussed, without having to go through all the messages.
Does it activate by itself? No: it's optional
WhatsApp doesn't activate this feature automatically. Each user decides when to request the summary and whether to use it or not.

This means you can keep reading chats the old-fashioned way, or request a summary only when you need it.
Meta assures that chats remain private
According to WABetaInfo, the summaries are processed privately and aren't stored. In addition, they're caused through a system that verifies the request comes from a legitimate client.

The data isn't saved or used for other purposes, and no one but you can access the summary. Other chat participants aren't notified.
When will WhatsApp summaries reach all users?
For now, this feature is available only in the United States and in English. However, it's expected to reach more countries and other languages in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp has already made it clear that the rollout will be gradual. If it hasn't appeared for you yet, it's just a matter of time.
