Ahmed al Ahmed was identified as the man who performed an extraordinary act of bravery, saving dozens of lives

Ahmed al Ahmed, a 43-year-old merchant and father of two, was identified as the man who carried out one of the most remarkable acts of bravery following the Islamic terrorist attack that took place this Sunday at Bondi Beach in Sydney.

A video shows the moment when Ahmed runs toward one of the strikers, manages to seize the weapon, and forces him to retreat, an intervention that, according to authorities, prevented a higher number of victims.

The shooting occurred during an event celebrating Hanukkah that brought together more than 1,000 people. The New South Wales police later confirmed that the attack was a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community.

Fifteen people have died so far and dozens have been injured. The alleged strikers were identified as a father and his son, aged 50 and 24. The older man died at the scene, while the younger remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The images widely shared on social media show one of the strikers firing from behind a palm tree, near a small pedestrian bridge.

In the video, Ahmed al Ahmed is initially seen taking cover behind a parked car. At a key moment, he leaves his hiding place, runs toward the assailant, and lunges at him. After a struggle, he manages to disarm him, pushes the striker to the ground, and points the weapon at him, forcing him to flee.

After neutralizing the assailant, Ahmed lowers the weapon and raises one hand, apparently to make it clear to the arriving officers that he was not part of the attack. In the same area, another shooter continued firing, although it is unclear at whom or what the shots were directed.

During his intervention, Ahmed al Ahmed was shot twice, once in the arm and once in the hand. He was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

According to statements from his family, his condition is stable, although he remains hospitalized. His cousin explained that doctors indicated he is out of danger, although further details about his recovery are still awaited. "He's a hero, 100% a hero," he said.

Australian authorities publicly praised his actions. In a press conference Sunday night, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns highlighted that Ahmed's bravery saved many lives. "That man is a true hero and I have no doubt that many people are alive thanks to his bravery," he stated.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute to those who acted to protect others. "We've seen Australians today run toward danger to help others. They're heroes and their bravery has saved lives," he noted.

Ahmed, owner of a fruit shop and with no ties to security forces, has become a symbol of civic courage amid a tragedy that has shocked the country.
