Daniel Noboa and his ADN caucus strengthen state control in prisons while Correismo criticizes the measure

The National Assembly approved with 84 votes the reform of the Law for the Strengthening of the Penitentiary System. The measure forces those deprived of their liberty to work to meet their needs and seeks to regain control of prisons

.

The reform establishes the creation of a prison intelligence system, reclassification of the dangerousness of prisoners and the legitimate use of force by guards. The ruling party maintains that the law will make it possible to overcome the prison crisis that the State has been facing for years, inherited from correismo

.

Training, evaluations, trust tests and rotation of security personnel are included to prevent corruption and ensure integrity.

The project was backed by the DNA bench and rejected by the Citizens' Revolution, which questions effectiveness without prior control of prisons. The debate focused on the need for prisons to return to state authority in the face of

criminal gangs.

The official assemblywoman, Inés Alarcón, assured that the reform will make it possible to dignify the productive activities of prisoners while serving their sentence. The government and ADN seek for the State to regain full control of prisons, which today present problems of violence and corruption inherited

from correismo.
