Assemblyman Sergio Peña warned that correísmo could become extinct like the PRE.

Peña denounced impositions and lack of renewal in the Citizen Revolution after his expulsion

Assemblyman Sergio Peña was relocated on May 30, 2025, in the Plenary, far from his former Revolución Ciudadana colleagues. His new seat was placed near the Acción Democrática Nacional bloc, thus marking his definitive break with the movement led by Rafael Correa. This action took place during the first debate on the urgent economic law against criminal economies, proposed by President Daniel Noboa.

Peña was clear in his criticism: "If there is no renewal in correísmo, the same thing will happen to it as to PRE," he said, comparing RC to the now-defunct Partido Roldosista Ecuatoriano. According to him, the organization is dominated by three or four figures who make all the decisions. These statements come after he was expelled for having voted in favor of the preliminary report on the law sent by the Executive.

In his statements, Peña directly pointed to former presidential candidate Luisa González and president of the Childhood Commission, Viviana Veloz, accusing them of wanting to impose their will on the other legislators. He cited an episode in which Veloz, upon learning that Peña would be proposed for the Legislative Administration Council, stated: "If I do not go, no one goes."

He also lamented that correísmo did not support him to join either the CAL or the Ethics Committee. Curiously, he obtained the latter position with votes from ADN, Pachakutik, and independents, revealing a new correlation of forces within the Legislature. Peña also stated that other correísta legislators had shown similar discontent, although they do not dare to speak publicly.

Peña declared: "I leave disappointed because I thought all those urban legends that even if someone hits or kills, they still support them, were lies." For him, the concentration of power in a few hands undermines the internal legitimacy of the bloc. His speech reinforces a narrative that is already beginning to emerge among former correísmo members: the lack of internal democracy and the inability to tolerate dissent.

The assemblyman also explained his favorable vote for the first report on the Criminal Economies Law, promoted by the Executive. He assured that his observations were heard in the Economic Development Commission, but warned that this doesn't imply a blank check. If improvements are not introduced in the second debate, he will vote against it.

Peña's critical stance not only creates tension within the Revolución Ciudadana bloc, but also highlights a pattern of political deterioration in structures that do not adapt. The absence of renewal and the concentration of power in recurring figures accentuate the fragility of personalist movements, as already happened with PRE or Partido Social Cristiano in previous decades.

The expulsion of Sergio Peña and his subsequent statements reveal a deep fracture within Revolución Ciudadana. His denunciation of internal authoritarianism, together with his call to renew leadership, demonstrates a growing disconnect between the grassroots and those who currently control the movement. If correísmo doesn't address these questions, it risks repeating the fate of parties that disappeared for refusing to evolve.
