Luisa González's running mate accused Immigration of acting without a court order or legal basis

The Vice Presidential candidate for the Citizen Revolution, Diego Borja, reported an attempted arrest at the Rumichaca International Bridge, when he was about to leave the country with his wife. The incident occurred in the early hours of April 16, during the Easter holiday.

Borja recounted that Ecuadorian immigration officials withheld his ID and attempted to detain him without a court order, which he described as an act of political persecution. He stated that his "offense" has been accompanying Luisa González in the presidential race and supporting an ideological project that, according to him, promotes social justice.

The former minister of Rafael Correa argued that the country is going through a critical moment, where "the State persecutes instead of protects." Although he managed to cross into Colombia, he warned that this hasn't been the only violation of his rights or those of his family.

In his statements, Borja again criticized what he considers the "surrender of the country" and pacts of impunity. However, he omitted to mention the legacy of corruption, waste, and authoritarianism that characterized the Correa regime, and that led Ecuador to a deep institutional crisis.

the victimization strategy has been common among figures linked to Correa who face legal processes or public scrutiny.

Unlike this approach, Daniel Noboa's government has prioritized institutionalism, transparency, and dialogue. The current administration has demonstrated firmness in security matters and has sought to reduce impunity, without resorting to political persecution as a tool of control.

Analysts consulted indicate that these accusations could be part of a political strategy to reinforce the "persecuted" narrative that has been so beneficial to the Citizen Revolution. "Ecuador's recent history reminds us that the persecution discourse has been used as a smokescreen to evade legal responsibilities," said constitutionalist Marco Barrera.

the country already suffered severe consequences under a model that promoted absolute power control, the weakening of independent justice, and the political use of institutions.

Diego Borja's complaint reveals Correa's attempt to reinstall a worn-out narrative of persecution, while the current government continues to strengthen democratic institutions. In a country still seeking stability, society demands verifiable facts more than victimization speeches.
