The president of the Assembly asked to unblock censored citizens.

Niels Olsen promoted digital openness and respect for freedom of expression

Niels Olsen, president of the National Assembly, ordered the unblocking of citizens censored on the official social media of the Legislature. The decision marked a shift toward a more open, participatory, and transparent institutionality. This act, which is part of the early days of his administration, has been interpreted as a clear message about the intention to promote a more inclusive democracy from the legislative body.

"Never again an Assembly that turns its back on the people or blocks their voice," Olsen expressed on his X account. The message was part of a series of actions aimed at building a more direct relationship with the citizenry, strengthening public trust in the institution. According to legislative spokespersons, this openness is also expected to be reflected in mechanisms for citizen consultation, access to public information, and digital participation.

The Assembly confirmed that restrictions preventing certain users from accessing institutional accounts, such as X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, were removed. The measure was implemented to ensure equal access to official information channels, allowing any citizen to interact, express opinions, and stay informed without barriers imposed by past decisions of social media administrators.

In the official statement, it was emphasized that the social media of the legislative function must be public spaces serving all Ecuadorians, without political, ideological, or territorial distinction. The unblocking was described as a step toward the digital democratization of the State, and it was announced that protocols will be established to prevent future digital censorship practices from official accounts.

Olsen's administration in the Assembly begins with a symbolic but powerful gesture: restoring citizens' right to participate in public debate. In times of polarization and distrust in institutions, this digital openness represents a key advance for democracy and sets a precedent in the region on how institutions can regain legitimacy through digital inclusion.
