The Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton, defeated John Cornyn decisively -who has held a Senate seat for nearly 23 years and is one of the most visible faces of the establishment of the Republican Party- in the runoff of the primary elections held this Tuesday. With this victory, Paxton will face Democratic candidate James Talarico in November to determine who will be the new senator from Texas.
The Trump-backed candidate harvested more than 62.5% of the votes against 37.5% of his opponent. President Donald Trump had endorsed Paxton last week, calling him "the highly respected Attorney General of Texas" and "someone who has been extremely loyal" to the MAGA movement.
Trump also praised Paxton for supporting the "elimination of the filibuster" in the Senate and the "Save America Act" (in English, SAVE America Act), two of the key legislative measures the president is pushing in Congress as part of his agenda.

The end of the road for Cornyn
Despite the old guard Republican member attempting to defend his seat by pointing out that he has supported many of the initiatives presented by the MAGA movement in the Senate during Trump's two terms in the White House, his campaign received contributions from Democrats and Republicans who voted in favor of Trump's impeachment in 2021.
