Republican legislators in the United States have formally requested Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to use the country's veto power in the United Nations Security Council to prevent the possible appointment of Michelle Bachelet as the next general secretary of the international organization. The initiative, led by Congressman Chris Smith, reflects strong opposition within the US conservative sector to the candidacy of the former Chilean communist president, based on her political record and her performance in
multilateral organizations. In a letter, legislators argue that Bachelet's trajectory demonstrates a consistent tendency to promote policies favorable to abortion from positions of power, both nationally and internationally. In that sense, they believe that his possible leadership at the head of the UN could deepen the organization's deviation from its founding mission of maintaining international peace and security
.One of the main questions focuses on his management as United Nations high commissioner for human rights. During that period, Bachelet publicly criticized the ruling of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization,” which established that the Constitution does not guarantee the right to abortion and returned to states the power to legislate on the matter
.The former president described the decision as a “great setback” for women's rights, a position that was harshly questioned by Republican legislators, who interpreted it as interference in internal American affairs.

According to the signatories of the letter, such statements show a lack of respect for national sovereignty, one of the principles that should guide the actions of the UN Secretary General. Along these lines, they warn that Bachelet does not meet the criteria set out by the current US administration, which has emphasized the need for leadership focused on transparency, accountability and respect for the internal decisions of
member States.Criticism also includes her time at UN Women, where she served as executive director. According to legislators, during his administration, he actively promoted the concept of “reproductive rights”, a term that includes access to abortion. This approach is part of an ideological agenda that generates divisions between countries and exceeds the original mandate of the United Nations
