A group of U.S. deputies and senators sent a letter to the Secretary of State requesting that the candidacy of the former Chilean president be vetoed.

Compartir:

Republican legislators in the United States have formally requested Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to use the country's veto power in the United Nations Security Council to prevent the possible appointment of Michelle Bachelet as the next general secretary of the international organization. The initiative, led by Congressman Chris Smith, reflects strong opposition within the US conservative sector to the candidacy of the former Chilean communist president, based on her political record and her performance in

multilateral organizations.

In a letter, legislators argue that Bachelet's trajectory demonstrates a consistent tendency to promote policies favorable to abortion from positions of power, both nationally and internationally. In that sense, they believe that his possible leadership at the head of the UN could deepen the organization's deviation from its founding mission of maintaining international peace and security

.

One of the main questions focuses on his management as United Nations high commissioner for human rights. During that period, Bachelet publicly criticized the ruling of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization,” which established that the Constitution does not guarantee the right to abortion and returned to states the power to legislate on the matter

.

The former president described the decision as a “great setback” for women's rights, a position that was harshly questioned by Republican legislators, who interpreted it as interference in internal American affairs.

According to the signatories of the letter, such statements show a lack of respect for national sovereignty, one of the principles that should guide the actions of the UN Secretary General. Along these lines, they warn that Bachelet does not meet the criteria set out by the current US administration, which has emphasized the need for leadership focused on transparency, accountability and respect for the internal decisions of

member States.

Criticism also includes her time at UN Women, where she served as executive director. According to legislators, during his administration, he actively promoted the concept of “reproductive rights”, a term that includes access to abortion. This approach is part of an ideological agenda that generates divisions between countries and exceeds the original mandate of the United Nations

.

The questions also extend to his career as president of Chile, where he promoted the decriminalization of abortion under certain circumstances. This reform was considered one of his government's main initiatives and is cited by legislators as evidence of their commitment to policies that they consider contrary to the defense of life

Another relevant point of criticism is its action in the face of complaints of human rights violations at the international level. In particular, legislators mention his visit to China in 2022, during which he did not take a sufficiently firm stance against abuses against the Uighur minority. This episode is presented as a sign of weakness in the face of authoritarian regimes and a lack of leadership in situations of

high gravity.

In this context, Republican legislators argue that the possible appointment of Bachelet as Secretary General would pose a risk to the internal balance of the UN and to the confidence of member States in the impartiality of their leadership. In his view, his record suggests that he would continue to promote agendas that they consider controversial, rather than focusing on international cooperation and

conflict resolution.

The final decision will largely depend on the position taken by Rubio, who, as head of U.S. diplomacy, plays a key role in the process. The United States, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has the power to veto high-level appointments, giving it decisive influence in the selection of the next

Secretary General.

The veto request is also part of a foreign policy promoted by the administration of President Donald Trump, which has promoted a critical review of the role of the United States in international organizations. Under this vision, an attempt has been made to limit support to institutions contrary to national interests or aligned with specific ideological agendas.

Marco Rubio, in his power as head of US diplomacy, has the right to veto Bachelet's candidacy because of the US position on the Security Council
