The President of the United States once again warned Europe to increase the military budget in the face of growing tensions in the Middle East.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is once again evaluating the possibility of withdrawing American troops stationed in Germany, in a decision that could redefine Washington's relationship with its European allies and reconfigure the balance within NATO.
According to a report, sources close to the administration pointed out that there is growing frustration in the White House regarding the level of financial commitment of several European countries in the area of defense. “The frustration we have had with the Europeans has been very real,” said one of the sources, stressing the discomfort over what they consider to be an uneven distribution of burdens within the alliance
.
Currently, all NATO members meet the minimum objective of allocating 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to defense spending, a goal agreed in 2014. However, the Trump environment is pushing for a significantly higher 5% threshold, which seeks to reflect a stronger commitment to current global challenges
.
In this context, numerous sources indicated that the US administration has also proposed a stricter stance regarding decision-making within the alliance. “Any country that isn't paying 5% should not be able to vote on future NATO spending,” said one of them, suggesting a change in the bloc's governance rules
. President Trump is considering withdrawing thousands of American troops from Germany if NATO does not increase the military budget
For his part, the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, announced that the leaders of the member countries must present concrete plans to move towards the new spending objective at a summit to be held in Ankara later this year. The meeting will be key to defining the direction of the organization in an international context marked by geopolitical tensions and new threats
to security.
The possible withdrawal of troops is not a new idea. According to the same report, Trump had already considered last year the option of withdrawing around 35,000 troops deployed in Germany, a measure that, if implemented, would mean a significant change in the US military presence in
Europe.
Analysts point out that this possible decision could be interpreted as a tool of pressure for European allies to increase their investment in defense and assume a more active role within NATO. From the perspective of the Trump administration, the objective is to achieve a more equitable sharing of responsibilities, reducing the burden that has historically fallen on the United States
.
In addition, the withdrawal of troops would allow Washington to reevaluate the global distribution of its armed forces, adapting them to new strategic priorities in other regions of the world. This flexibility is considered key in an increasingly dynamic international scenario.
The Secretary General of NATO assured that European states must submit their plans, considering the new defense spending threshold
