Like Milei, Trump proposes to replace the nefarious “Obamacare” with health vouchers

The American president proposes to replace the current health system with direct payments to citizens, questioning the role of insurers.

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said that the “Affordable Care Act” should be eliminated and replaced by a system that directly transfers public funds to citizens, instead of allocating them to health insurance companies.

In a publication published on the Truth Social platform, the president harshly criticized the current health legislation, which he referred to as the “Unaffordable Care Act” (“Unaffordable Care Act”). As he explained, the current model is excessively dependent on intermediaries and does not offer sustainable long-term solutions. In that regard, he stated that resources should be given directly to individuals so that they can choose and purchase their own health coverage

.

The “Affordable Care Act” or well known as “Obamacare”, was enacted during the administration of socialist Democrat Barack Obama, sought to expand access to health through subsidies, expansion of Medicaid and regulations for insurance companies. However, since its implementation, it has been the subject of criticism from republican sectors and society in general, who question both its fiscal cost and the role of the federal government in the healthcare system

Trump, who during his term of office had already promoted attempts to dismantle these regulations, reiterated his position of moving towards a more consumer-oriented scheme. Although he did not provide specific details about the implementation of his proposal, the suggested approach would involve a profound structural change: moving from a system based on subsidies to insurers to another in which citizens directly receive the money to contract health services in the

market.

The president's statements also generated attention in financial markets, where a possible impact on large companies in the insurance sector is anticipated. Potentially affected companies include UnitedHealth Group, Elevance Health, CVS Health, Centene Corporation and Humana, whose business models rely heavily on the administration of plans funded partially or

fully with public funds.

Analysts point out that a possible reform in this direction could redefine the functioning of the American health system, reducing the role of traditional insurers and increasing competition between providers.

Trump seeks to establish a system that is much more oriented to the final consumer and to generate healthy competition between health care providers.

The debate surrounding the future of the healthcare system in the United States continues to be one of the most relevant and divisive debates on the political agenda. While most sectors support greater individual autonomy and a market approach, a small group of democrats and extremists of socialism defend the need to maintain regulatory mechanisms and extreme state support to ensure equitable access to

health care.

In this context, Trump's recent statements reaffirm his intention to promote a profound transformation of the system, generating great expectations about how to balance and improve costs, coverage and efficiency in health care in the country.
