Qatar has established itself as the main foreign funder of United States universities since 1986, surpassing China, in a context of strong growth in international contributions, which show a growing foreign interference in the academic environment to promote a leftist and anti-American agenda
.
According to a study by the Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI), foreign donors have provided as much money in the last four years as in the previous four decades.
Between 2021 and 2024, American universities received nearly 29 billion dollars in external funding, a figure that more than doubles the total of the previous period and represents approximately half of the 57.97 billion dollars accumulated since the federal government began recording this data in 1986.

In this scenario, Qatar tops the historical ranking of foreign funding with 6.3 billion dollars, consolidating above China,
which accumulates 5.6 billion.
The report highlights that both countries have significantly increased their contributions in recent years: between 2021 and 2024 alone, Qatar allocated more than 2 billion dollars, while China reached 2.3 billion in the same period.
According to Joel Finkelstein, co-founder of the NCRI, the situation reached a critical point in recent years. “During the Biden era, the storm broke out,”
he said.
“This is not just a financial problem, but a national security crisis. Hostile powers are buying influence on American university campuses on an industrial scale,” he added.
The report also identifies some of the main institutions receiving these funds. Historically, Harvard leads with $3.2 billion in foreign contributions, followed by Cornell and Carnegie Mellon,
both with $2.8 billion. Data from the study.
In addition, China is the main source of foreign funding at elite universities such as Harvard, Columbia and
Stanford.
A 2024 study by the National Association of Academics revealed that universities failed to declare at least $1 billion in foreign funding since the start of Joe Biden's presidency, much of it coming from countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
In addition, previous investigations by the Department of Education during Trump's first presidency had already detected $6.5 billion in unreported funds of foreign origin.
The report warns that the real figure could be even higher, since it only includes officially reported donations, while at least 200 universities would have hidden billions in foreign contributions.
In this context, the NCRI maintains that the volume and origin of these funds reflect a growing influence on the American academic agenda, with a special impact on progressive lines of thought and criticism of the United States.
