One day before the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers, this morning President Donald Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the family of Welles Crowther, a hero known as "The Man in the Red Bandana" who saved dozens of people from death on that painful September 11.

Trump recounted Crowther's story, a stock trader and volunteer firefighter who found an exit on a staircase of the South Tower of the World Trade Center after a plane crashed into it, leaving people trapped.

"After the plane struck the South Tower, a group of people on the 78th floor was trapped with broken bones, charred skin, and eyes and lungs filled with black smoke. Death surrounded them. It was imminent. They were sure they were going to die. Then, suddenly, a rescue appeared. They called him the Man in the Red Bandana," described the Republican leader.

"When he heard cries for help on the 78th floor, he began to extinguish the fires blocking the exit and guided the survivors who could walk, which were not many. He physically helped some. He literally dragged them to the only operational staircase and carried those who could not walk. And he did things that people said were not even imaginable, because they knew they were dead," Trump continued.

Trump shared that Crowther's father, who was also a volunteer firefighter, had given him his signature bandana. "When asked why he always kept it, Welles replied: 'With this red bandana, I am going to change the world. I am going to change the world with this bandana.' Little did he know that on September 11, Welles saved many, many people before losing his own life in the lobby of the South Tower when the building collapsed."

Crowther's mother, Allison, was present at the ceremony and thanked the president for honoring her son. "That Welles' light continues to shine brightly today, even after 25 years, is a testament to his legacy of courage, compassion, and love for humanity, which continues to inspire and uplift others," she stated.

To close the ceremony, Trump recalled that he had promised Crowther's mother and sister that their loved one would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest civilian honor a president can bestow. Years later, the head of state fulfilled his promise, and Crowther was immortalized in American history.
