In the context of the Cuban Independence Day, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, issued a message with strong definitions regarding the political situation on the island, in which he reaffirmed the historical origin of the Cuban nation, harshly criticized the communist regime, and confirmed his policy of pressure with sanctions and actions in the region.
The president began by highlighting the historical significance of the date, stating that it marks the “124th anniversary of the birth of a nation that was once free, forged through sacrifice, courage, and an unyielding desire for freedom.”
In this sense, he drew a parallel with American history: “Just like the American patriots who rebelled against tyrannical rule 250 years ago, Cuba's founding generation rose up against the subjugation of the Spanish Empire to claim the same inalienable right that our citizens enjoy today: the right of a free people to govern themselves.”

In his message, Trump also emphasized the persistence of those values over time. “Throughout generations, the Cuban people have demonstrated an unyielding devotion to the cause of freedom and a resilience of spirit that no regime—past or present—has been able to extinguish,” he stated.
Additionally, he recalled that May 20, 1902, marked the beginning of self-government on the island with the establishment of the Republic of Cuba.
Criticism of the Communist Regime
However, the central focus of the speech was a direct criticism of the current communist regime. “The regime that prevails today in Havana represents a direct betrayal of the nation for which its founders fought and died,” he asserted.
He added: “For nearly seven decades, the communist government of the island has violently dismantled political freedom, denied the people fair elections, brutally silenced dissent, and strangled the Cuban economy to the point of collapse.”

The president also targeted the leadership of the Caribbean country by stating that “while the people suffer, the kleptocratic elite of the regime has hoarded the remaining resources of the island for their own benefit and luxurious lifestyle.”
In the same vein, he described the political model as part of “any radical leftist ideology” that “has annihilated any hope of prosperity, banished the notion of human dignity, and suffocated the hopes and dreams of its people.”
In another part of the message, Trump linked the Cuban situation with his government's regional strategy and U.S. national security. “As President, I am taking decisive action on behalf of this region of our hemisphere, which has suffered so much, and to address the threats to our national security that emanate from it,” he assured.
In this context, he stated that his administration is advancing in cutting funding to hostile dictatorships: “Our nation is cutting off the financial support that, for too long, has sustained brutal regimes in Central America and South America, financing their criminal and transnational terrorist operations that threaten the United States.”

The Capture of Maduro
One of the most striking passages of the speech was the reference to Venezuela. Trump highlighted that “in January, our incredible Armed Forces carried out one of the most daring and impressive special operations of recent generations: the capture and extradition of the Venezuelan narco-terrorist Nicolás Maduro.”
He emphasized that “the indictment and removal of Maduro sent a clear message to his socialist allies in Havana: this is our hemisphere, and those who destabilize it and threaten the United States will face consequences.”
Regarding Cuba, he reaffirmed that he has imposed "new and strong sanctions against the military and intelligence apparatus of Cuba, as well as against those who provide material and financial support, depriving the regime of resources and its elites of the opportunity to profit from the suffering of the people.”
The president also highlighted his maximum pressure stance: “My commitment is unwavering: the United States will not tolerate a rogue state harboring military, intelligence, and terrorist operations hostile to just ninety miles from its territory.”
Finally, the message closed with explicit support for the Cuban people and the Cuban-American community. “On this Cuban Independence Day, our Republic stands in solidarity with the Cuban people and with the millions of Cuban-Americans who have profoundly enriched the life of our nation,” he expressed.
And he concluded with a projection towards the future: “Today, we salute and remember all those who have sacrificed for a free Cuba, and we look confidently towards a new Golden Age for the island and its people.”
