The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confirmed this Saturday that he will nominate Lance Schroyer, a former Marine and former member of the Oklahoma state police, as the next director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The president described Schroyer as a "proven leader with DECADES of experience locking up the worst of the worst" and highlighted his background in law enforcement. ICE has not had a permanent director since late May, when Todd Lyons resigned; since then, David Venturella, a former executive of a private prison operator, has served as the agency's acting director.
If confirmed by the Senate, Schroyer will take the helm of ICE with the goal of fulfilling Trump's promise to carry out mass deportations in the country. To achieve this goal, the agency has a budget of $75 billion that has funded the hiring of 12,000 officers and has allowed for an increase in the detention of undocumented criminals. Additionally, the new director will have to face leftist activists who are trying to block the enforcement of immigration law.
