Pátzcuaro under attack by CJNG: silences, links, and Morena's negligence
In the early hours of Tuesday, Pátzcuaro experienced a day of terror. At least 80 hitmen from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) attacked local police, leaving six officers injured.
According to official documents, the target was Alberto "Beto" Arreola Ochoa, nephew of Morena's mayor Julio Arreola. Alberto Arreola is under investigation for alleged links with cartels such as Pueblos Unidos and Los Caballeros Templarios.
The attack left blockades, burned vehicles, and a paralyzed community. The State Attorney General's Office confirmed that the attack was directed against Arreola Ochoa. The mayor, however, has remained silent and has not issued statements or condemned the events.
Morena and links with organized crime
Julio Arreola, current mayor of Pátzcuaro, won the 2024 elections under the banner of Morena. Previously, he governed the municipality representing the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico, which has raised questions about his political loyalty.
The situation in Pátzcuaro is not an isolated case. Reports from the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) indicate that at least 29 mayors in Michoacán have links with drug trafficking. The majority belong to Morena or alliances led by this party.
Violence in Michoacán has reached alarming levels. The CJNG has carried out coordinated attacks in multiple municipalities, leaving a trail of death and destruction. Federal and state authorities have shown a limited and, at times, delayed response.
Complicit silence and absence of justice
The lack of action by the authorities has been interpreted by many as a form of complicity. The silence of Mayor Arreola in the face of the attack on his nephew and the violence plaguing his municipality is deeply concerning. The citizens demand answers and concrete actions to ensure their safety.
It is stated that Morena, as the ruling party, has the responsibility to investigate and sanction its members involved in illicit acts. Corruption and links with organized crime can't continue to be tolerated from power.
It is imperative that measures are taken to restore confidence in institutions and ensure the rule of law.
The situation in Pátzcuaro reflects a broader problem affecting all of Michoacán. The infiltration of drug trafficking into government structures represents a direct threat to democracy and the security of citizens. It is urgent to act with firmness and determination to face this challenge.
