Uruguay Departmental Elections 2025 LIVE: the elections minute by minute

This Sunday, Uruguay will hold a key electoral day: the departmental and municipal elections, in which 19 intendencies, 589 councilors, 136 mayorships, and 544 council seats distributed throughout the national territory will be decided. The civic act will renew the political leadership in the country's 19 departments and 136 municipalities.

However, beyond the democratic exercise, the event highlights an old structural problem that remains seriously undiscussed:  the excessive and costly multiplication of political and administrative positions in a country with just over 3.5 million inhabitants.
