The expansion of the Mendoza Metrotranvía is progressing with new technical tests, with Natalio Mema, Minister of Government, Infrastructure, and Territorial Development, as one of the main promoters of the project. The initiative aims to expand the electric transport network of Greater Mendoza, extend the route to Luján de Cuyo, and connect the system with El Plumerillo International Airport.
The first technical tests at the Benegas Station, located in Godoy Cruz, represent an important step for the expansion of the railway infrastructure. The provincial government's goal is to consolidate a broader network capable of integrating different departments and offering new mobility alternatives for residents, workers, and tourists arriving in Mendoza.
The project includes phases III and IV of the Metrotranvía, with extensions to the south and north of the metropolitan area. In this way, the system will be able to connect sectors of Maipú, Godoy Cruz, the City of Mendoza, and Las Heras, with the possibility of reaching two strategic points for economic and tourist activity: Luján de Cuyo and the airport.
The arrival of technical tests at the Benegas Station marks a concrete advance in the expansion works. The new section incorporates five kilometers of double track and six stops, in a project that took three years of work and involved more than 350 people.
The tests are part of the process prior to the activation of regular passenger service and allow for the necessary verifications to ensure the system's operation.
In this context, the planning led by the Government of Mendoza aims to support the growth of the metropolitan area with higher capacity and reach transport infrastructure. The expansion requires coordinating civil works, electrical installations, railway signaling, and safety adjustments before putting the new routes into operation.
One of the main objectives of the project is to extend the route to El Plumerillo International Airport, located in Las Heras. The work plans for about six additional kilometers to the north, from the Panquehua area to the airport terminal.
The connection will incorporate the airport into the electric public transport network and facilitate the transfers of passengers, workers, and visitors. It is an infrastructure improvement with the potential to strengthen Mendoza's connectivity and facilitate access to one of the main entry points to the province.

The provincial government presented this connection as a distinctive initiative within the transport infrastructure of Latin America. However, its operation will depend on the completion of the works and the corresponding technical and safety verifications.
The extension to the north is part of a broader strategy: to transform the Metrotranvía into an integrated metropolitan network, with connections that reduce distances between different departments and improve transport options for those commuting daily through Greater Mendoza.
The expansion of the Metrotranvía is not limited to the construction of tracks and stops. The section that reached Benegas includes complementary infrastructure necessary to ensure the system's operation.
Among the main components are:
Fifty tram traffic lights.
Seven technical facilities for signaling and electrical supply systems.
These components are essential to ensure the circulation of the trains and allow the network to function in a coordinated manner as new sections are incorporated.
Additionally, the Province has incorporated trains from the Metropolitan Transit System of San Diego, United States, which have been adapted to operate in Mendoza. The availability of units and the planning of future incorporations will also be crucial to support the expansion of the service.

The expansion towards the airport is one of the key axes of the initiative, but not the only one. The provincial government is also working to extend the Metrotranvía to Luján de Cuyo, with service expected to begin in the second half of 2027.
The expansion will add new stations and improve connections for residents in the south of Greater Mendoza. At the same time, it will help integrate different sectors of the metropolitan area within the same electric transport network.
The planning of both extensions aims to respond to the mobility needs of a region that concentrates residential, commercial, industrial, and tourist activity. A more extensive network could facilitate daily commutes and offer alternatives to reach strategic points without relying exclusively on cars.
With the technical tests in Godoy Cruz and the planned works towards Luján de Cuyo and El Plumerillo, Natalio Mema and the Government of Mendoza are advancing with a transformation of the Metrotranvía aimed at expanding connectivity and modernizing provincial public transport.
The realization of the upcoming phases will be key to determining the definitive reach of the network and the benefits it will have for users in Greater Mendoza.
