After several weeks of uncertainty, Gonzalo "Pity" Martínez will finally continue his career at Tigre. After becoming a free agent from River on December 31, the attacking midfielder from Mendoza reached a verbal agreement to join Matador and will have an 18-month contract, with conditions tied to his sporting performance.
Although at first there was speculation about a new experience abroad, the 32-year-old footballer decided to stay in the country. There was also no return to Huracán, the club where he was developed, since there were no formal contacts because he was not a priority for coach Diego Martínez.
In that scenario, Martínez's name was offered to Tigre, where both the board and the coaching staff approved his arrival. Negotiations moved forward quickly and only the final signature remains to close the deal.
El Pity buscará volver a tener protagonismo en Tigre
If his signing is completed, Pity would return toMonumentalbefore long, but wearing different colors. Tigre shares Group B of the 2026 Apertura Tournament with Millonario and the two teams will face each other on Saturday, February 7, from 8:00 p.m., on the fourth matchday of the competition.
Martínez was the last of River's leaders who had become free agents at the end of 2025 to define his future. Enzo Pérez has already reached an agreement with Argentinos Juniors, Ignacio Fernández has returned to Gimnasia, Milton Casco has joined Atlético Nacional de Medellín. This way, these protagonists of the historic Madrid final already have a new destination.
At Tigre, Pity will seek continuity and prominence, something that he did not manage to sustain in his last spell in Núñez. In addition, he will join a squad that aims high in 2026 and that will have international competition with the Copa Sudamericana.
Pity's numbers at River
Gonzalo Martínez had two spells at Millonario, one clearly more glorious than the other. In the first one, from 2015 to 2019, he established himself as one of the main standard-bearers of Muñeco Gallardo's team. During that period, the midfielder played 161 matches, in which he scored 35 goals, the most memorable being the third in the Madrid final against Boca, and he provided 36 assists.
However, if there is something that stands out from his first spell, it is the titles. In those four years, Pity celebrated championships on eight occasions: 2 Copas Libertadores (2015 and 2018), 2 Recopas Sudamericanas (2015 and 2016), 2 Copas Argentina (2016 and 2017), 1 Recopa Argentina (2018), and 1 Suruga Bank (2015).
El Pity fue clave en la histórica Libertadores 2018
Later, in mid-2023 he returned to the Núñez club under Martín Demichelis's guidance, but the story was completely different. Constant injuries kept him away from the field for long stretches, so he lost rhythm and importance in the eyes of both Micho and later Gallardo. In his second spell he appeared in only 31 matches, in which he scored 2 goals and provided 6 assists, and he won a title on one occasion (2023 Champions Trophy).
In total, the native of Bermejo played 193 matches wearing the Banda jersey, in which he scored 37 goals, provided 42 assists, and lifted 9 titles.
