Banco Nación closes its branch in Ramos Mejía due to high municipal rates.

From the entity, they point against the General Services Tax imposed by La Matanza, with a rate of 7.5%

After nearly eight decades of operation, the Banco de la Nación Argentina decided to close its historic branch in Ramos Mejía this Wednesday, April 30. According to the entity, the measure was taken due to the high tax cost represented by the General Services Tax applied by the municipality of La Matanza, whose 7.5% rate is among the highest in the country.

Clients have already been transferred to a nearby branch

According to the official statement, the clients of the Ramos Mejía branch were automatically migrated to the Ciudadela branch, located just 15 blocks away, in the neighboring district of Tres de Febrero. There they can operate normally, without the need for additional procedures.

"In municipalities like Tres de Febrero, the tax structure is more reasonable and doesn't penalize the presence of the Bank or make credit more expensive", explained the financial institution.

The tax burden doubled operational costs

During the first eight months of 2024, Banco Nación paid $3.5 billion solely in municipal taxes in La Matanza. That figure, according to the entity, is equivalent to the annual salary of 150 employees, which doubles operational costs and limits the financing capacity for both SMEs and families.

"The fiscal impact is so significant that it directly affects the ability to offer competitive loans and maintain a viable operational structure in the district", sources close to the bank's management indicated.

A decision that marks the end of an era

The Ramos Mejía branch had more than 75 years of history. Its closure represents not only an administrative decision but also reflects an underlying conflict between the local tax scheme and the sustainability of banking services.

Banco Nación insisted on the need to review municipal fiscal policies to avoid discouraging investment and access to credit, especially in areas where the public sector plays a key role in financial inclusion.
