Córdoba Police closes 2025 with a total of 374 "naranjitas" arrested at different points in the province for various crimes. Official statistics from the Ministry of Security reflect an alarming average of more than one arrest per day throughout the current period.

Howeverpolitics decided to halt the reform that sought to prohibit the activity and postponed the legislative debate until February 2026. The pressure exerted by the Church and corporate sectors prevented the ruling party from passing legal tools against extortion.

Minister Juan Pablo Quinteros stated that all actions replied to calls from residents to 911tired of the daily coercion there. The official warned that the figures are only a symptom of a growing overflow that requires a firm approach from the provincial State now.

Nueva Córdoba encabezó el listado con el 30,38% de los detenidos seguida por el Centro y Alta Córdoba donde la actividad comercial es muy alta.

Hot zones and criminal offenses

The official survey indicates that a significant part of the arrests was concentrated in central neighborhoods with greater purchasing power. Nueva Córdoba topped the list with 30.38% of those arrested, followed by Centro and Alta Córdoba where commercial activity is very high.

The report details that 216 of the interventions were directly linked to the commission of criminal offenses on the local public streets. The other 158 arrests correplied to violations of the current Coexistence Code due to the illegal occupation of urban public space.

Article 60 of the Code, which penalizes the guarding of vehicles without authorization, was the most used to justify police operations. Security forces also recorded 18 arrests for illegal possession of weapons and 42 cases for suspicious behavior in the urban area.

La política decidió frenar la reforma que buscaba prohibir la actividad y postergó el debate legislativo para febrero de 2026.

Paused reform

The legal reform that eliminated the exception of voluntary payment was shelved in the Legislature after the statement from the local Social Pastoral. The ruling party yielded to clerical lobbying and decided not to address the "controversial articles" in the last session of the year to avoid conflicts.

The lack of legislative support leaves Police without the necessary tools to effectively combat the mafias that take over the streets. Residents of the capital will have to continue dealing with extortion by "cuidacoches" at least until the start of the next regular period.

The bill that established effective arrest for those who operate without municipal authorization could not move forward due to a lack of political conviction. While insecurity grows on public streets, legislators chose to delay the definitive solution to maintain peace with their partners.
