Earthquake in Córdoba: a 4.8-magnitude tremor shook the capital and the southern part of the province
Inpres confirmed that the seismic event was recorded at 5:42 p.m. and was felt in various parts of the Córdoba region
A strong earthquake was recorded in Córdoba on Friday afternoon, surprising thousands of residents. The seismic event occurred at 5:42 p.m. and caused concern in the capital. According to official data, it reached 4.8 on the Richter scale.
The National Institute for Seismic Prevention (Inpres) reported that the epicenter was located 122 km southwest of La Rioja. It was also situated 161 km northeast of San Juan, with a depth of just nine kilometers (5.6 miles). The magnitude made it noticeable in much of the provincial territory.
Residents of neighborhoods in the capital stated that they felt the tremor strongly. In addition, movements were reported in Traslasierra and in towns near Río Cuarto. Within minutes, social media was filled with messages recounting the experience.

Impact in the province
Although no significant material damage was reported, the magnitude of the earthquake caused alarm among the population. Many residents left their homes and buildings as soon as they felt the movement. Authorities recommended remaining calm and reviewing preventive measures.
Inpres recalled that the region has a history of moderate seismic activity. Córdoba doesn't usually record high-magnitude events, but it does experience noticeable movements like the one that occurred on Friday. Specialists emphasize the importance of citizen preparedness.
Provincial Civil Protection monitored the situation in coordination with municipalities. As of the close of this edition, no victims or serious emergencies had been reported. Attention was focused on urban areas with higher population density.

The technical data
The national agency specified that the depth of the movement was only nine kilometers (5.6 miles). That shallow depth allowed it to be clearly felt in different localities of Córdoba. The magnitude of 4.8 made it one of the strongest tremors in recent years in the province.
Specialists indicated that the perception of an earthquake depends on proximity to the epicenter and the composition of the ground. For that reason, in the provincial capital, residents reported more intense tremors than in other areas. The technical information was made available on Inpres's website.
This record adds to the series of moderate seismic events that have affected the center of the country in recent months. Córdoba is once again in the news for a natural phenomenon that, although it caused no damage, put the population on alert.
