Cristina Kirchner's economic situation worsens: she declared herself unable to subsist

The former president, face of Kirchnerism, judicially declared an inhibition that leaves her unable to support herself

In a turn bordering on the tragicomic, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, former president of the Nation and current leader of Kirchnerism, declared through her lawyers that  she can't "subsist" now that she lacks the millionaire allocations she received for having held the head of state and for being the widow of the also former president Néstor Kirchner. The presentation was made before ANSES in an alarmist tone, denouncing that her client "doesn't own assets" and that any income to her estate "would be automatically frozen" by a judicial inhibition.

"The only income that allows her to subsist," they stated, "is her lifetime monthly allocation," which they described as an unseizable social security right. A narrative that attempts to construct an image of financial vulnerability for someone who, until recently, was receiving scandalous amounts.

$19,645,844.41 corresponding to her pension as a former president, and $15,609,453.32 as a widow's pension.$35,255,297.73 monthly.

As if that were not enough, Cristina Kirchner also enjoyed a "southern zone bonus", due to declaring residence in  Río Gallegos. In September 2024 alone, this bonus added  $5,960,861 additional, liquidated in both allocations.

The national government's decision to suspend these payments—based on the incompatibility of simultaneously receiving two benefits according to Law 24.018—triggered an immediate reaction from the Kirchnerist circle, which seeks to reverse the measure through administrative and judicial actions. It should be noted that this incompatibility is still under judicial review, in a case that has been open for some time.

Cristina Fernández de Kirchner filed an unusual judicial claim alleging that she can't "subsist" without her privileged pensions, which at their peak brought her more than $21.8 million net monthly. In April 2025, the minimum pension in Argentina barely reaches $285,820.74, to which an extraordinary bonus of $70,000 is added, totaling $355,820.74. Even beneficiaries of non-contributory pensions for disability or old age receive $270,074.44 with the bonus included. In the face of this brutal inequality, the former president—indicted in multiple corruption cases—seeks to equate her situation with that of the country's most vulnerable sectors, using the term  "subsistence" to defend a millionaire privilege that is currently under judicial and social scrutiny.
