At 72 years old, Dennis Quaid proudly displays a toned abdomen that generates both admiration and curiosity. How does he manage to maintain that physical state as a septuagenarian? The actor, born on April 9, 1954, in Houston, Texas, explained that there are no big secrets or magic formulas. It all goes back to a lesson he learned in his youth at a gym in Hollywood.

There he practiced boxing and met a man in his fifties with an impressive physique. When he asked for advice on how to achieve those abs, the companion replied with a phrase he never forgot: “take care of yourself in your twenties and thirties, and the rest will come naturally.” Quaid confessed that he followed that teaching to the letter and that this simple idea sums up much of his current secret.

The star of films like The Right Stuff, Traffic, The Day After Tomorrow, and Jaws was never nominated for an Oscar, but today he draws attention for his figure. He claims he doesn’t follow an exhausting workout routine. His key is to stay active every day and not remain in the comfort zone.

For 35 years, he ran daily. When he started to feel discomfort in his knees, he stopped running and switched to cycling. He complements that activity with yoga, as he discovered it helps him maintain joint flexibility. “The important thing is not to stay on the couch. My motto is to do something proactive every day,” he stated.

Balanced diet without extremes

Those abs don’t depend solely on movement. Nutrition plays a central role. Quaid avoids diets that promise quick results because they are hard to maintain over time. He prefers a balanced plan based on fresh products and very few ultra-processed foods.

In his menu, he prioritizes lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. This way, he gets the necessary energy to train without feeling heavy. Another key point is moderation: instead of completely eliminating the foods he loves most, he controls the portions. This makes the diet more manageable and easier to maintain in the long run.

The actor has also shown great resilience in the face of health-threatening issues. He confessed that he started using cocaine at a very young age and only managed to quit after rigorous treatment. Since the early nineties, he has remained sober.

On the sentimental front, he went through difficult times. In 2001, he experienced a scandalous divorce from Meg Ryan, the mother of his first son, Jack, who is also an actor. After ten years of marriage, the actress fell in love with Russell Crowe during the filming of Proof of Life and left him. Quaid fell into a deep depression but managed to overcome it with a lot of effort. Physical exercise was one of the pillars to move forward.

A personal life in constant motion

He later married real estate agent Kimberly Buffington, and in 2007 they had twins: Thomas and Zoe. He has currently been in a relationship for six years with accountant and academic Laure Savoie, who is 39 years younger than him. Despite the ups and downs, he maintains the same philosophy he learned decades ago at that gym in Hollywood.

For Quaid, the secret lies not in extreme sacrifices or miraculous promises. It resides in taking care of oneself from a young age, moving every day, and eating in balance. That combination, along with consistency, allows him to showcase a physique that at 72 still generates admiration and intrigue.
