Although Boca had a dream start, Boca couldn't maintain the lead and drew with Benfica.

Xeneize took a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes of the match, but defensive errors and pressure from the Portuguese team resulted in a draw in their Club World Cup debut

Boca had a dream first 45 minutes with two goals in the first half against a Benfica that started off poorly and improved as the match went on, and managed to secure a hard-fought draw in the opening matchday of the Club World Cup.

In the opening minutes of the match, Xeneize was weakened by Benfica's pressure and lost Ander Herrera, one of its key players, due to injury. However, in the 21st minute, Lautaro Blanco broke down the right and delivered a perfect cross for Miguel Merentiel's excellent finish, who scored what was, up to that point, an unexpected 1-0.

Moments later, the Ribera club would surprise again and, through a header from Rodrigo Battaglia, would take a two-goal lead over a Portuguese team that could not find answers.

Although it seemed the first half would end without many more highlights, near the end Carlos Palacios would bring down Nicolás Otamendi in the box and Ander Herrera, already on the bench, would be sent off for protesting. Ángel Di María was the one who took the penalty, managing to pull one back for his team.

Up to that point, Boca was putting in a more than decent performance and was neutralizing all of Benfica's attempts. To make matters worse for Benfica, they would be reduced to ten men in the 72nd minute, after Belotti was sent off for a kick to Ayrton Costa's head. However, despite the numerical disadvantage, Nicolás Otamendi would equalize with a header in the 84th minute.

Clearly affected by the draw and the frustration of losing all 3 points, Boca began to panic, which led to the foolish sending off of Nicolás Figal 4 minutes later.

With 10 players on each team, the match seemed like it could still offer another surprise, but time ran out. The 2-2 draw left Boca with a bittersweet feeling after having a clear chance to take the win and Benfica will have to reconsider many things before the final matchday against Bayern Munich.
